The summary as presented on this Amazon offering is completely incorrect. This is absolutely not a gardening book! Rather it is the fascinating compliation of hunting and related experiences from Alaska to Africa which were involved with the study, collecting and taxidermy of large animals mainly for the American Museum of Natural History in the 1920's to 1940's. Rockwell was a brilliant sculptor and taxidermist, a naturalist and outdoorsman, who like many of similar bent in the early decades of the 20th century manifested his interest and love of nature by hunting and collecting, and by advancing education in natural history through museum displays for the public. The book includes fascinating description of his work, his evolution as a hunter, relationships with some of the most interesting, adventurous and courageous people of the time including the iconic Carl Akeley. For those interested in the era of assembling the incredible dioramas of the American Musem of Natural History, or who want a gripping read of adventure with some very challenging animals and circumstances, this is a highly desirable account. It is easy to judge from our present conservation perspectives in world of 7 billion people that such hunting was simply savage or self-indulgent, but those who knew some of these figures personally (as I did) appreciate the impressive and inspiring people that many of them were, and the generous humanity that they embodied.
